Starting something new can feel intimidating but at Empower we embrace ALL BODIES. All classes at Empower are open level, meaning you’ll be in class with beginners and experienced yogis alike. Our talented instructors will offer multiple variations and modifications for poses throughout the practice - Listen to your body and learn to trust the intuitive teacher inside of you and never feel pressured to get into a pose, do what’s right for you and your body. New to hot yoga or just new to Empower Hot Yoga? Maybe you haven’t taken a yoga class in a while, or are unsure if our studio is a good fit for you? Have questions or interested in learning more about us and the community? Come by the studio during our New Client Orientation, we will have our doors open specifically for the new and the curious. This orientation is completely free for new clients. Between 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM we will assist all walk-ins, answer questions, do studio tours, go over our new client specials and sign new members.

Before Class

 

PREPARE FOR CLASS

ARRIVAL - Arrive 15 minutes early so we can show you around and get you prepped for the best sweat of your life. You will need to fill out the registration and liability waiver prior to class. Coming early will allow you to get settled into the room and lie on your mat, acclimate to the room before class begins. Yoga is meant to be enjoyed, it’s important to take it slow and have fun with it. To make things easier you can create an account online and fill out the digital waivers and register for class. We can’t wait to get sweaty together.

WHAT TO WEAR & BRING - Bring a yoga mat, mat towel and water to every class. We recommend a small hand towel and shower towel. Mats and towels are available to rent. Wear breathable clothing that is comfortable, and you can move freely. Avoid cotton fabric.

HYDRATION & DIGESTION - Come to class hydrated and on an empty stomach. Make sure to drink plenty of water before you practice and plenty of water after class to stay hydrated. Bring a refillable canteen and a staff member can help you fill up at our complimentary water station as needed. Water, Coconut water, and Electrolyte hydration packets are available for purchase at the front desk. Don’t eat right before class. We recommend that if you are hungry, eat something ‘light’ within the hour or two before you practice. Some people need more or less time to digest, as you practice more you will see what works best for you in the heated room.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF

SAY HELLO - Introduce yourself to the teacher! We are so excited to meet you! You can visit The Empower Family page to read up on your teacher before class. Let your teacher know of any physical limitations, injuries or health issues so they can provide appropriate modifications and assistance throughout class. Don’t be shy, we want to get to know you just as much as you want to get to know us. Feel free to share your goals, why you showed up on your mat and let us know how we can help you reach your full potential.

GET TO KNOW US - Empower is more than just a workout. A community. A family. A place to be challenged and to challenge others. We set goals together. We celebrate victories. We encourage laughter, and love. We come together to sweat, move and connect. Yoga is a lifelong practice. Yoga is meant for all ages and all types. As long as you are focused on your breathing, your thoughts, and doing the best that you can every time you practice, you will receive all the benefits. Even if you are not as flexible or perfectly balanced as someone next to you, what you look like in the poses doesn’t matter. The goal is to stay focused on yourself and love who you see in the mirror. We are here to raise each other.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT CLASS

CLASSES - We have a variety of class offerings to suit your specific yoga needs. All of our classes are all-levels, and they range from hot, warm and no heat. It takes 3-7 classes for your body to acclimate to the heat and to find the rhythm! It is completely normal and okay to be a little overwhelmed during your first class! Be kind to yourself: listen to your body, rest when you need to, and try to stay in the room. The more you practice, the stronger you get. If some of our evening classes are too crowded for you, consider other classes. Daytime classes are typically less crowded. We also have small group private lessons that you and a group of your friends can book. When starting out, don’t hesitate to look around the room to see others doing the poses and get hints in all directions from modifications and advanced postures.

During Class

 

CLASSES ARE HOT

ABOUT THE HEAT - Some of our classes are notoriously hot with temperatures ranging from 85ºF to 107ºF, so you are guaranteed to sweat! We offer a wide variety of classes from hot, warm and non-heated. Our room is intentionally heated to induce numerous physical and psychological benefits. Heat helps the detoxification process and helps warm up your muscles and allows you to work deeper and safer. The heat heals, helps prevent injuries, and promotes sweating which flushes toxins from your body - say hello to glowing skin. Give yourself as many classes as you need to adjust to the heat…and learn to embrace being sweaty. Our state-of-the-art system monitors temperature, humidity and even oxygen levels to ensure the air you breathe is of the highest quality. Specialized filters remove harmful airborne microorganisms including bacteria and viruses. During any class, feel free to take a rest. Go ahead - lie down on your back, belly or in child’s pose.

INSTRUCTOR LED

OUR INSTRUCTORS - We pride ourselves on having some of the best and most experienced instructors. Every time you walk into the studio you will be greeted and welcomed with open arms. Every time you get on your mat for class, you’ll be taken on an experiential journey. Every detail - from the sequence to the music, to the lighting and even smells - has been carefully curated to heighten your awareness and stimulate your senses. Once you arrive on your mat, please be mindful and listen to the cues of the instructor as they lead the class. If you have any questions, feel free to ask the teacher after class in the lobby. Do not talk throughout class or be a distraction to the teacher or fellow yogis. Empower loves feedback and we are all ears if you have something to share, especially our instructors.

LEAVING EARLY – If possible, we ask that you do not leave the studio during class. It can be disruptive to the instructor and your fellow yogis. If you need a break, we recommend you take a break. Child’s pose or savasana are excellent resting yoga poses. If you need to leave early, please notify the instructor before class so they don’t worry about you once you walk out of class.

GROUP SETTING

OUR CLASSES - Yoga means union, and we believe in the power of unity and community to foster spiritual, physical, and emotional growth. Our classes are offered in a group setting to help you feed off the collective energy and feel connected to those around you as you move in unison. We offer props for all classes so feel free to grab a block or strap if you need it for class. At the end of class our teachers will guide you into Shavasana and from there will offer a cold essential oil hand towel to be placed over your eyes. They will remind you that palms up means you would like a towel and palms down means no and palms on the stomach means you’d like the teacher to place the cold towel on your head for you, letting you stay in rest. After class you can use the towel to do a quick wipe of your yoga mat. All rentals must be wiped down, rolled up and placed against the wall near the door. All cold towels and mat towels can be placed in the gold bin behind the door in the yoga room. Shower towel rentals must be placed in the dirty laundry bin in the changing rooms. We appreciate you helping us keep the studio tidy.

TALKING - Empower is a friendly studio, and we wouldn’t have it any other way! However, quieting the mind is an important part of many yoga practices. TO RESPECT THIS, please keep voices low in the lobby area and be mindful of others’ peace while in the yoga room before and after yoga classes. For fitness classes that do not require quieting the mind; talk, laugh, encourage one another, and have a blast while in the studio. We HIGHLY encourage socializing in the changing room, the parking lot, the lobby or outside of the yoga studio.

After Class

You may feel very tired after class. This is common at first as this is something new that you are asking of your body. It is also a good sign that your body is responding to the yoga by cleansing and detoxifying. Conversely, you may feel extremely energized after class, so much so that you have difficulty sleeping. This is also a good sign that the yoga is working for you. With continued practice, many find that they need less sleep yet have more energy. Make sure to drink plenty of water after class to stay hydrated.

Whether you’re getting ready for work or a night out in town, we’ve got you covered. Our showers are equipped with shampoo, conditioner and body wash products to wash away toxins and replenish your skin after class. Complimentary amenities include spray deodorant, feminine products, hair ties, Q-tips, blow dryer and body lotion.

Studio Etiquette

 
  • NO SHOES - When you arrive remove your shoes and leave them in the cubbyholes in the lobby or the changing rooms. No shoes allowed inside the yoga rooms.

  • NO CELLPHONES - Disconnect! Turn your phones off and leave outside of the yoga rooms. Important calls can be made outside. Please notify the front desk if you are on-call, pager or phone must completely be on silent and do not disturb mode.

  • BE SCENT FREE - To respect a shared environment, avoid heavy body odor and aim to go scent free.

  • NO LATECOMERS - Arrive on time. 5-10 minutes before class to give you enough time to settle in. Doors are locked once class starts.

  • SILENCE - Observe silence in the yoga rooms. Please NO talking inside the yoga room. Feel free to chat quietly in the lobby before or after class. If you are talking in class, we will politely give you a warning. If you continue to not listen, you will be asked to leave the class.

  • QUICK SHOWERS - Out of respect for the earth and your fellow yogis, please be mindful of the time you spend rinsing off. Keep showers short & sweet!

  • RESPECT TEACHERS & STAFF - Move with the instructions. Modifications and advanced movements to the postures are OK. If you wish to do your own moves and own practice, you can rent the studio space for yourself. Please keep to the practice that is being led by our trained teachers. If you wish to add some of your own moves, set your mat in the back of the room to avoid distraction and confusion for new students.

  • KEEP DOOR CLOSED - Keep the door closed when entering and exiting to keep the heat in. Try not to leave mid-class unless you need to.

  • Why Hot Yoga?

    Yoga is a system for whole-self wellness that evolved from ancient practices in India and Northern Africa. Through physical movement, breathwork, meditation, mindfulness, and philosophy this practice contributes to increased physical health and mental well-being!

    Why the heat? The hot environment commands a sharpening of your mental focus, concentration and willpower during class. The heat helps loosen your muscles and can increase your flexibility. With the heat you get to cleanse your body inside and out and sweat toxins and heavy metals while also getting the benefits of a yoga class.

    Some of the many benefits of hot yoga include:

    Increased flexibility and mobility - As energy waves penetrate the body, muscle and joints not only heal faster from injury and inflammation but move more freely. The heat allows you to stretch further and achieve a greater range of motion. It can help you gain greater flexibility in your lower back, shoulders, hamstrings.

    Reduced stress and anxiety - As circulation in the body is increased and stored toxins are released, the result is less stress on internal organs, which helps relieve tension in our minds, our muscles and joints. Hot yoga can release the “feel good” hormones, such as endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin. Hot yoga and yoga in general have been proven to enhance your mood and overall sense of well-being.

    Better quality sleep - From hot yoga you will start feeling more energized, rejuvenated, and cleansed and will sleep much better. Practicing meditation or any form of yoga will boost your melatonin levels, leading to better sleep. Yoga teaches us how to turn down the volume of thoughts, decreasing anxious energy, supporting a quieter mind and restful sleep.

    Increased metabolism - Heat affects your metabolism during exercise; prolonged exposure to heat can actually speed up your metabolic rate. Yoga has a powerful stimulating and strengthening effect on the endocrine organs and thus can boost metabolism to burn more calories.

    Healthier internal organs -Sweating is your body’s natural cleanser, releasing stored toxins, impurities and waste products. It also supports internal organs like your kidney and liver for improved functioning and longevity.

    Detoxification - Hot yoga serves as the perfect catalyst - not only to aid in the removal of toxins via detoxification, but also to help keep your body in prime waste-busting form. The heat helps increase blood flow and helps the lymphatic system to release toxins through sweat.

    Improved breathing and immune system - Hot yoga increases lung capacity, and this increases oxygen intake, it also provides the heart with larger amounts of oxygen. The excessive sweating promotes the body to expel toxins more efficiently and can help with environmental pollutants and allergens that can trigger asthma. The heat helps lower stress hormones that compromise the immune system, while also conditioning the lungs and respiratory tract, stimulating the lymphatic system to oust toxins from the body, and bringing oxygenated blood to the various organs to ensure their optimal function.

    Increase blood circulation - The heat actually improves blood circulation in the body and allows fresh blood to flow into the muscles more easily which makes them more pliable; meaning that you are able to stretch longer, fold deeper and hold poses longer than you would in an unheated room.

    Practicing yoga creates space for physical, mental, and emotional transformation. When you step into consistent practice, you'll start to see yourself in a new way, explore different perspectives, let down your walls, and connect with your true self.

    We believe in coming to class as you are - messiness and all. You don't need to be your "best self" here. All you have to do is show up as your authentic self with an open mind and heart.

    We LOVE new students! We have non-heated, warm and hot classes. Our classes are designed for all levels, beginner through advanced, all body types and all athletes. Tight hips, injuries, back issue, frozen shoulders, if you can’t touch your toes, this is the place to go. Come try our classes.
